Gordon Family Sweeps 2022 Stadium Super Trucks Opener at Long Beach

From the day he was born, it should be no surprise that Max Gordon was destined to be a racecar driver. The son of Robby Gordon, a race winner in just about every form of motorsport known to man, quickly got behind the wheel of his dad’s race vehicles in both the desert and on the pavement, and it wasn’t long until he came to grips with both.

Saturday, however, marked a key first: the younger Gordon finished directly ahead of his dad on the streets of Long Beach, scoring his first career Stadium Super Trucks victory and becoming the youngest winner in series history at 13 years old. That broke a mark previously held by current NASCAR Xfinity Series front-runner Sheldon Creed, the winningest driver in series history. Robert Stout kicked off his second full SST season by completing the podium ahead of three-time and defending series champion Matt Brabham.

On Sunday, it was the elder Gordon’s turn to take top honors, with Brabham and Max Gordon coming home behind him. Coming to the finish line, though, that finish appeared highly unlikely; despite heavy pressure from Gordon all the way through the hairpin, YouTube star Cleetus McFarland had done a magnificent job of withstanding pursuit and entered the final straightaway with the top spot.

Unfortunately, McFarland lost control and spun, allowing the entire podium plus Stout, Ryan Arciero, Gavin Harlien, and Zoey Edenholm to get past him before he could finally cross the finish line. The Freedom Factory owner had started third thanks to a 10th place finish on Saturday and full-field invert.
